2015 US1M NCR
By Rich Phillips
The US1M NCR began with a pre-race check-in, , boat measurement and practice on Friday under beautiful skies and warm temperatures. About half the registered 18 skippers showed up on Friday to check out the venue and get used to the layout. Saturday morning arrived with winds out of the NNW at about 10mph, predicted to go up as the day progressed. The skippers meeting was held at 9:30a.m. and racing began at 10.
The 17 skippers who were able to compete were divided into two fleets after a qualifying first race, which resulted in the A and B fleets. The HMS scoring system was utilized with the bottom two finishers of A fleet being bumped to B fleet, and vice versa for B fleet where the top two finishers moved up to the A fleet. Over the two day event each fleet was able to complete 17 races, ending about 2p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
A variety of hull designs were entered, including the old and tested Venom and Talon, however, a design by Mr. Art Lent of the hosting club also had four entries. The ‘Intrusion’ finished 1st, 6th, 12th, and 14th overall. The day started fast with Baron Bremer, Commodore of the Jacksonville, Fla. Club, Larry Grant and Gary Boell from California hot on his heels. The wind shifted from the preferred NNW direction later in the day and a course change was made. At the end of day Baron was leading and likely difficult to catch on Sunday. The Race Director, Angela, also the secretary of the hosting club, arranged a catered delivery from a local restaurant that worked out wonderful. Every skipper and regatta volunteer were provided with an extensive menu from which to select and was received well by all. No more standard subs or pizza- this ranged from salads, fresh fish and tacos, to clam rolls and a variety of specialty burgers.
Sunday’s weather also started off beautiful. The wind direction had shifted from the NNW direction to almost dead East. Winds were a little stiffer at about 13mph and some sailors switched to their B rigs to accommodate the stiffer breeze. The RD made a big course adjustment to take advantage of the weather legs. Baron continued to sail very well all day, followed by Larry and Chris Stater out of Hallandale, Fl. Also racing very well was Colin Mosgrove from the Boston area. At the end of the day and after the throw-outs were subtracted Baron Bremer was crowned the National Champion with a total of 26points. He had six firsts and two seconds with no official finish less than 4th. Larry Grant was 2nd with a total of 47 points, and Chris Stater close by at 54. Colin Mosgrove and Gary Boell finished 4th and 5th, respectively. Baron is an excellent sailor and only had this particular boat for three weeks prior to competing in the NCR.
