Soling 1 Meter NCR in Madison, OH
(full story will appear in Model Yachting)
The 2018 Soling 1 Meter NCR was held Sept 25 – 29, and for the first time in Ohio, hosted by Western Reserve MYC at BSA Camp Stigwandish, Madison, Ohio. This was the largest AMYA regatta this year, and for many years in any class, with 46 boats competing. A Wednesday through Saturday schedule was used for the first time in the Soling Class to give competitors travel or touring time instead of a 2-day weekend format. Wednesday featured a Match Racing Tournament, followed by three days of fleet racing on Thursday, Friday and until noon on Saturday.
Fleet Racing Heat Management was by A, B and C fleets of 16 or 15 boats each, in a three-way system of rotating boats through the three fleets based on finishes in the previous Heat. The “three-way odd/even” system (developed by Florida’s Art Hawes) meant that, to win, sailors had to race with and at times work around sailors of varying abilities. In the author’s opinion – it was a fair, and better way to run a big regatta than Promotion/ Relegation.
Racing was VERY competitive with a field of top competitors- any of 5 to 8 racers could conceivably have won.
On Day 1- sailing was challenging with very light, shifty air of with significant shifts. On Day 2- we had almost perfect sailing conditions- bright sun, winds 7- 10 mph, and minor (but still present) shifts. On Saturday, Day 3, winds changed to the NW and the course was filled with holes, shifts and weird directional patterns caused by trees on the shoreline and the 4 foot high dike.
After 15 Races/ 45 Heats it was Peter Feldman winning his first Soling NCR, just 3 points ahead of 5-time Champion Reichard Kahle, who was tied for 2nd at 26 with Scott Rowland. On the tiebreaker- most 1s - Reichard was second with Scott third. Also in the money (awards) Colin Mosgrove 4th and Jack Ward 5th.
A great time was had by most!! Our thanks to all the competitors, and especially Western Reserve Model Yacht Club, for a premier event!!
